THE STUDENTS THAT SUNG THEIR WAY TO FREEDOM

Sarafina is a 1992 musical drama that exhibits a rare and unusual genre. To be honest, musical dramas are very difficult to pullout because getting a musical training is inevitable and in most  cases the cast  might have little or no experience.

The story centers on a young beautiful school girl by the name Sarafina (Leleti Khumalo) who spear-headed a revolution against the school’s policy of using  English as the official language  . Their fight was to introduce Afrikaans as the official language instead.

The story was inspired by true events in the apartheid era as South Africans were still struggling at that time.

My thoughts: The film is still a master piece. The choreography and musical dramatization clearly indicates that the group had been performing in similar acts other than the said movie. The cocktail was a pure blend of real talent and every cast played their roles in a manner that was out of their comfort zone :They gave it all.

FACTS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT SARAFINA

·         Some of the cast members participated in the real-life resistance in Soweto.

·         When the main character- Sarafina auditioned, she was only 15 years.

·                      Soon after the movie was done. The film director (Mbongeni Ngema) married Sarafina.I guess the director deserves a medal!!!.
