I AM NOT A WITCH is a 2017 drama film from Zambia that was written and directed by Rungano Nyoni and produced by Emily Morgan. 

 

‘A girl is accused of being a witch in a remote hamlet in Zambia, setting her on a path of exploitation that includes working as a hired witch, a tourist attraction, and a chained member of a witches' camp’.


 

ACCOLADES

 I Am Not a Witch received numerous nominations and wins at prestigious film festivals and prizes, including an honor at the 2017 British Independent Film Awards and a win at the 71st British Academy Film Awards for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer

At the 2017 Adelaide Film Festival, it took home the prize for Feature Fiction.

INTERESTING FACTS

Real-life accounts of witchcraft accusations in Zambia served as an inspiration for writer-director Rungano Nyoni. She went to Ghana for research purposes and stayed in a real witch camp there, where she observed the everyday activities and rituals of the residents.
